What Is Liver Abscess???

Liver abscess is a condition in which a pus filled cyst is developed in the liver. The liver is an organ in the digestive system that helps in the digestive process and performs many other necessary functions such as producing bile to help break down food into energy, creating essential substances like hormones, cleaning toxins from the blood, including those from medication, alcohol and drugs and controlling fat storage and cholesterol production and release.

Pus is a fluid which is composed of white blood cells and dead cells that develop when the body fights off infection. An abscess occurred with swelling and inflammation in the surrounding area. It can also cause pain and swell in the abdomen. A liver abscess can be dangerous, if it is not treated properly on time.

http://www.thegastrosurgeon.com/liver-abscess/

A liver abscess can occur to anyone. The condition can be developed by infections that directly spread from the nearby structures such as the bile draining tubes, from the intestines or appendix, or carried in the blood stream from other distant parts of the body. A liver abscess can also be the result of any surgery or other strain to the liver.

Treatment For Liver Abscess

The treatment for liver abscess depends on the level of infection. Low level of infection can be treated with the help of antibiotics but high level of infection may need surgery. Surgery includes inserting a needle and placing a drainage catheter into the abscess to eliminate the infection containing pus. A liver biopsy is also performed to analyze overall health of the patient with the help of CT scan and ultrasound.

Treatment For Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Inflammatory Bowel Disease includes a group of disorders which cause inflammation in the digestive tract. The digestive tract includes the different organs in the body which are responsible for the breaking down of food, digestion and absorption of nutrients, and disposal of waste. They include the oesophagus, mouth, stomach, large intestine and small intestine.

http://www.thegastrosurgeon.com/crohns-disease/

Inflammatory bowel diseases also called IBD, cause a hindrance in the normal functioning of the digestive system and can be disruptive and painful. Chronic cases of IBD can assume life threatening proportions.

Types of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Though IBD is an umbrella term used to denote a number of diseases, the most commonly found IBD diseases are Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Crohn’s disease is caused due to an inflammation of digestive tract lining, mainly in the large and small intestine. Ulcerative Colitis occurs due to long lasting inflammations or ulcers in the inner lining of colon and rectum.

Symptoms of IBD

The symptoms associated with the disease, varies depending on the intensity and site of inflammation. The common symptoms are as follows: -
  • Abdominal cramping or pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Fatigue accompanied by fever
  • Reduced appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
http://www.thegastrosurgeon.com/crohns-disease/

Causes of IBD

The causes of IBD are yet to be ascertained. Though diet and stress factors had thought to potential culprits, they have been disregarded now. A possible cause of the condition would be immune system disorders. The immune system while fighting foreign bodies like viruses and bacteria turns against the cells of the digestive tracts as well causing unusual responses like inflammation.

Treatment for IBD

IBD diseases can be managed to a great extent with the help of medications. The medications administered include anti inflammatory drugs to manage inflammations and immune suppressants to reduce the aggravation of the disease due to immune system malfunction. Antibiotics are used to control the actions of bacteria as well. In severe and long lasting cases of inflammatory bowel disease, surgical procedures are used.

SIMS, offers advanced and quality treatment, specialised in gastroenterology for a wide range of disorders of digestive system.

Appendicitis Treatment In Chennai

Appendicitis is a condition caused due to the inflammation or swelling of appendix, a pouch shaped organ attached to the colon at the right side of abdomen. Characterised by severe abdominal pain, appendicitis is more prominently seen in male than females. They are known to commonly make an appearance in people between the age of 10 years and 30 years.

Although mild appendicitis can be treated with medications, most of the cases result in surgery. Appendix removal do not bring about any specific changes to the body. However, appendicitis when left untreated can lead to bursting of appendix, which can prove fatal.

Symptoms of Appendicitis

The symptoms of appendicitis closely resemble those caused due to indigestion and subsequent gas formation. If the symptoms continue to persist, diagnosis tests for appendicitis would be advisable.
Some of the symptoms associated with appendicitis include: -
  • Pain in the lower right side of abdomen
  • Severe pain in the area surrounding the belly button
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Constipation or diarrhoea
  • Swelling in abdomen
  • A low-grade fever

The abdominal cramps increase in severity with time in the case of appendicitis. Medical attention is necessary in case of persistent pain as appendicitis has the potential to develop into a medical emergency

Causes of Appendicitis

Appendicitis is believed to be caused due to an obstruction in the appendix. A complete obstruction in the organ makes an emergency surgery necessary. The obstruction can occur due to a blockage created by faecal matter due to the trauma, tumours, worms or enlargement of lymphoid follicles.

The presence of the obstruction leads to development of bacteria which in turn causes infection leading to swelling and inflammation of the appendix.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Appendicitis

Appendicitis can be diagnosed with the help of procedures like abdominal testing, blood analysis, urine analysis and ultrasound or CT scans.
Treatment for appendicitis might include antibiotic medications, in mild cases and surgery when inflammation cannot be contained with antibiotics alone. The surgical procedure for removal of appendix is called appendectomy. With introduction of laparoscopy, appendectomy has been simplified.

SIMS offers the best gastroenterology treatments in Chennai, with the expertise of a skilled gastro surgeon.

Best Way to Lose Weight within a Week

OBESITY” is prevalent among the young generation and the major causes of obesity are found as not eating at the proper time, in taking junk foods, adding more sugary items, sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise and the hereditary. Even after following strict diet regimen with proper exercise, one fails to lose weight, then the person may go for Bariatric Surgery to obtain healthy weight as well to rescue from heart, diabetic, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, and hypertension problems.

http://www.thegastrosurgeon.com/bariatric-surgery/

Bariatric surgery causes weight loss by restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold, causing nutrients malabsorption or gastric restriction or both. Most of the weight loss surgeries are performed in a minimally invasive procedure, laparoscopic surgery. Gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band, sleeve Gastrectomy, Biliopancreatic diversion with a duodenal switch are the common bariatric surgeries. Let us see some of the procedures in brief.

Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy: In this procedure, 85% of the stomach is removed leaving a sleeve-shaped stomach. With surgical staples, the new stomach is closed. This procedure can be done either as an open surgery or laparoscopic. Since a part of the stomach is removed, the procedure remains permanent.

Biliopancreatic diversion or BPD: A Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch gastric bypass is quite identical to sleeve Gastrectomy. A part of the stomach is removed and a small portion of the stomach remains. The first portion of the small intestine is divided at the stomach outlet and distal segment is connected to the new stomach.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding: Upper part of the stomach is wrapped with a silicone band with saline to create a small pouch above the band. Below the band are the rest of the stomach remains. With the less consumption of food patients feel satiated. After surgery, the opening size can be adjusted by adding or removing saline from the band through a dock under the skin. 40-50% of weight loss is experienced by the patients in this procedure.

Resolves Type 2 diabetes, deters the risk of developing heart diseases, effective for obstructive sleep apnea, improves life expectancy, and results with long term effect.
