In a Whipple procedure , removes the head of the pancreas , the gallbladder , the part of the duodenum which is the uppermost portion of the small intestine , a small portion of  the stomach called the pylorus , and the lymph nodes near the head of the pancreas. This procedure is performed for cancer of the pancreatic head , ampulla , tumors of the common bile duct and duodenal papilla. This surgery usually lasts between 5 – 8 hours.

Distal Pancreatectomy

Distal pancreatectomy is where the bottom half of the pancreas is removed by a surgical method. The most relevant reason for performing a distal pancreatectomy is the presence of tumor in the body or tail of the pancreas. This method involves the removal of neoplasms either laparoscopically or with open surgery. In both laparoscopic and pancreatectomy attempts to remove the bottom half of the pancreas due to the presence of a tumor in the tail of the pancreas.

There are 3 different types of techniques for distal pancreatectomy.

• Open distal pancreatectomy and Splenectomy

 In open distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy procedure the body and tail of the pancreas is removed with the spleen. The spleen is removed with the pancreas since the blood supply to the spleen is intimately associated with the pancreas.

• Spleen preserving distal pancreatectomy

Spleen preserving distal pancreatectomy is available where the spleen is preserved removing only the pancreas.

• Laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy

Laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy offer laparoscopic removal of the pancreas to the patients that have cystic tumors in the body or tail of the pancreas.
